✨ The stats ✨
“Living on the Edge” aka Perry is a Dark bay 2017 16hh OTTB by Jump Start, out of Edge City (by Petionville). Perry has first field fox hunting experience with the Mission Valley Hunt Club, USEA-recognized eventing experience at beginner novice (finishing on his dressage score), ‘C’ rated Hunter/Jumper experience (with clean rounds at 3’), and has been used consistently in a lesson program (giving up-down lessons to beginners and teaching kids how to jump.) Perry is brave, a quick learner, safe, and loves people. He is ready for his own kid or adult amateur to take them any direction they want to go, and he would make an excellent Pony Club mount. Perry is sound, fit, and ready to compete, and despite his lack of show experience, he has plenty of schooling experience and is ready to head out right away at Novice level. With a few more shows under his belt he will be ready for training level. Lack of funds force sale. He is currently available to be tried in Stilwell, KS, which is about 30 minutes south of Kansas City International. He is priced at $30,000, terms and price negotiable.
✨ The details ✨
Perry was retired sound off the track after just 3 starts before getting sourced by Jessica Redman of Benchmark Sport Horses. He was given adequate let down time his 3 year old year, and has since been in a professional Eventing program. Perry has been relaxed, easy to handle, and a very quick learner from day one… while he is currently headed down the eventing path, I believe this horse can go in any direction successfully. He takes to new tasks like a fish to water, and is unbothered by every new thing we try with him. I feel he would also make a tremendous fox hunter, pony club mount, or all-around horse very happily. He is enthusiastic about jumping -both XC and stadium- jumps safely from any distance, and doesn’t seem to say “no” about any of the questions asked of him: banks, ditches, water, xc, oxers, gates, planks, liverpools, etc. Additionally, he is careful over fences and does not want to knock rails, even when he gets a green distance. He can take a joke and does not get offended when his riders get left behind or accidentally catch him in the mouth… he does not hold a grudge. He is currently showing BN height and schooling novice, but has jumped 3’6” (to test his scope.. not consistently) with ease. Perry is the perfect amount of forward, with an uphill and balanced, smooth canter, but I would describe him as a little on the kick ride side. He is not lazy, but this will not be a horse that pulls you out of the tack either. He is VERY light in your hand and currently goes in a happy mouth loose ring in all 3 phases. All you have to do is put your leg on, shorten your reins, and he naturally works over his back into the bridle.
Perry is brave and curious. He is unbothered by heavy machinery, loud 2 stroke dirt bikes, 100 ft. flapping tarps next to the arena, horses galloping next to him on the XC field, loose horses at shows, loose dogs barking at his feet on trail rides, semis flying by at truck stops, and best yet— he is not easily influenced by other horse’s shenanigans. He is safe to be ridden in a group or by himself, even bareback! He is an old soul in a young body. Even though Perry is still young, I would feel very comfortable selling him to a good Adult Amateur, or Junior/Pony Clubber with a coach. He would make an excellent first OTTB for a kid coming off a pony who wants a horse to move up the levels together.
In addition to Perry’s great brain, braveness over fences, and balanced gaits, Perry has the BEST feet I’ve ever seen in my 20+ years of experience with thoroughbreds. He has been barefoot since he threw his racing plates, and has been told by three different farriers how amazing his feet are… He has deep souls, EXCELLENT heels, and thick hoof walls— knock on wood, he’s never had an abscess since we’ve had him!
Perry is easy to catch in the pasture (he comes up to you!), ties and cross ties well (he even ground ties!), doesn’t move a muscle for the farrier and vet, stands rock solid for bathing/braiding/clipping, doesn’t trash his stalls, doesn’t pace fence lines and loads/unloads/hauls like a perfect gentleman. He has hauled across the country three times since we’ve purchased him, and he adjusts almost immediately in his new locations without any drama. He is unbothered by hustle and bustle of busy barns and he seems pretty independent when it comes to other horses, but he has a very goofy and friendly personality around people… he seems to prefer hanging out all day in the cross ties with his two legged friends, and he never gets impatient. Perry LOVES to cuddle. I genuinely believe he would thrive with an AA or a kid who wants their very own horse to spend time with as he very much gets attached to “his” people. Perry has been brought along slowly and methodically with no stone unturned, and now he is ready to go confidently out into the world and make somebody’s dreams come true.
